Lots to Do for Children in March at the Chicago Public Library

Toddler Story Time

Toddler Story Time is a thirty-minute program full of fun with stories, rhymes, and songs to help your child develop early literacy skills. You’ll get tips on incorporating talking, singing, reading, writing and playing into your day as a way to grow a young reader. Toddler Story Time, for children 18 to 36 months and their caregivers, meets on Wednesdays from 10:30 until 11:00 a.m., with time afterward for free play with blocks, puppets and puzzles. Younger children are welcome, also! No registration is required. Please email Children’s Librarian Laura Jenkins or call 312-744-8400 if you have any questions.  Please note:  There will be no story time on March 11.

 Play Date

Get out of the house and meet up with old friends or make new ones at our open play time. We’ll put out our puzzles, puppets, blocks and more for the little ones to play with. Bring your coffee, grown-ups, and relax with other families of young children. All children must be accompanied by an adult, of course.  Saturday, March 7 from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.

Explorers’ Club

Once a month, drop in for a STEAM activity for school-age kids. Robots, slime, science experiments, engineering … it’s something new every time! For kids ages 6 to 11 on Saturday, March 7 from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.

Kids’ Book Club

Like to read? Like to talk? Like to eat snacks? The Kids’ Book Club is for you! Kids ages 8 to 11 should pick up a copy of Star Scouts by Mike Lawrence at the Circulation Desk. Read it and come talk about it with other kids on Saturday, March 14 from 3:30 until 4:00 p.m.

Book Babies

Book Babies, an eight-week series for babies who are not yet walking and their caregivers, begins March 16.  This is a special time for parents or caregivers to focus on and bond with their babies while building the very earliest foundation for literacy. You’ll have a chance to socialize with other participants at the end of each session. If you’d like to join other young families for a comfortable session with lots of language and tips for introducing books, rhymes and songs into your baby’s routine, please contact Children’s Librarian Laura Jenkins and let her know your baby’s name and age, your phone number, and whether you’d like to be in the morning (11:00 – 11:30 a.m.) or afternoon (1:00 – 1:30 p.m.) class.  Classes are held on Mondays through May 4.
