Father Manuel Dorantes

Pastor, Saint Mary of the Lake Chicago; Strategic Advisor, Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication; Board of Directors of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Father Manuel Dorantes has been appointed as pastor of Saint Mary of the Lake in Chicago as of July 1st, 2019. A native of Mexico who immigrated to the United States when he was twelve, Dorantes felt that communicating with the media on the behalf of the Church was his calling, so while attending seminary, he worked for Telemundo’s local Chicago affiliate and later, for Univision. In 2007, he was ordained to the Transitional Diaconate and served as a deacon at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Des Plaines. He later served as the Associate Administrator of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In 2014, he was appointed Assistant to the Director of the press office of the Holy See, the central governing body of the Catholic Church, where he liaises with Spanish-speaking media and translates press briefings. In 2015, he made national headlines when he accompanied Pope Francis on his first trip to the United States, providing commentary in English and Spanish to NPR, MSNBC, the Chicago Tribune, Univision, Telemundo and other outlets. In June of 2017 he was appointed Strategic Advisor to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication, the newly created dicastery of the Holy See that oversees all of the Vatican’s communication properties. This year Father Dorantes was elected to the Board of Directors of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. For the past four years, he has served as a pastor at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in the Brighton Park Neighborhood of Chicago. Father Manuel Dorantes holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
